The whole world is about the bottom line.
Randolph to Conrad

At least at first.

However, Randolph is presented with evidence of Lane’s criminal behavior, and the FBI have been informed, who will soon want a warrant to search Lane’s clinic. Randolph questions Lane about what she’s been up to, and she tearfully nearly confesses to her poor treatment of patients. He tells Lane to get rid of the evidence at her clinic, but it is revealed that he let her get rid of the evidence at the same time as the FBI arrive to arrest her. [2]

Randolph and Kit Voss are close friends from the moment she arrives, and he is not shy that he is attracted to her. They maintain a professional relationship and flirt throughout the early seasons, and continue to get closer.

After a kiss on the cheek, the two split ways and turn to stare at each other longingly before walking away for the evening. In Now What, while getting a back massage from Kit, Randolph asks her if they should finally go on their date and tells her no one else's opinion of him matters more than hers. In The Thinnest Veil, Randolph is en route back to Chastain after a trip and picks up a hitchhiker. Kit repeatedly calls him, worried about him and rushes to him to embrace him when he arrives back at the hospital. The two walk away holding each other to go out for drinks and attend dinner at Conrad Hawkins together later that evening. Notes and Trivia[]

  • He has tremors in his right hand, which is probably the cause of why his mortality rates have increased. A possible cause for this is Parkinson's Disease, which is known to cause such tremors.
    • He has likely since recovered from the tremors in his hand.
  • He has a nickname, HODAD, that is circling around the hospital. It stands for the "Hands of Death and Destruction". It was given to him because of his mortality rate in surgeries.
    • However, he may no longer possess that nickname after his behavior changed.
    • It was brought up during a deposition in a lawsuit against him, though in the season six episode No Pressure No Diamonds.
  • On his slide, in the intro to the show, the words written are "Do no harm", with the "no" being crossed out.
  • He has been married and divorced twice.
  • He writes some of his own reviews.
  • He is a Renowned Surgeon, as mentioned in multiple episodes.
  • As seen in the Pilot episode, he sometimes coerces his patients into using him as their surgeon.
  • He likes to listen to music while performing surgery.
    • It is unknown if he still does this, though.
  • In Adverse Events, it's revealed that Bell did his own residency at Chastain a long time ago.
    • Also, in Adverse Events, Bell's long-time friend, as well as Chastain's long-time custodian, Simon, told Conrad Hawkins that Bell actually used to be a lot like Conrad back when he was younger. According to Simon, he caught Bell hiding from his attending when Bell himself was a resident and Bell successfully fought to get smoking banned from the hospital due to the danger it caused patients.
  • Over the course of the show, Bell becomes a better person and even forms friendships with the other members of the staff at Chastain, most notably with Dr. Kit Voss, whom he eventually marries in Season Six.
  • Bell currently has a form of multiple sclerosis that he is taking medication to treat.
  • He was the former Chief of Surgery and the Chief Executive Officer of Chastain Park Memorial Hospital.
  • He was a Board Member for the Georgia State Medical Board.

Memorable Quotes[]

Randolph [to Conrad]: I'm going to cut you some slack because I know you're upset. [points to self] Chief of surgery. [points to Conrad] Resident. Try to remember that.

Randolph: Healthcare has changed since then, and we need to deal with the new reality.

Randolph: It's my duty to train the next generation of elite surgeons, and on this day, the one in question, I pushed Dr. Okafor to exceed my expectations, and dly, on this day, she simply wasn't ready.
